Chess clubs of Riga and Pierīga 21

Riga clubs are known mostly through the tournaments they run. Riga Chess Club meets at Victory pub on Tirgoņu iela and says chess fans are welcome on any day; Šaha klubs “3+2” and Baltijas Šaha Akadēmija run weekend and blitz tournaments at Aspazijas bulvāris 32; the chess club of the Riga Latvian Society has its seat on Merķeļa iela; the Jewish community club plays on Skolas iela; and Šaha klubs Tornis holds its events in a school hall in Āgenskalns. JD Chess Club and Šaha kvartāls organise children’s and classification tournaments at changing venues, and ARchess runs a club championship and a spring cup.

The University of Latvia sports centre runs free chess sessions in the Science House at Jelgavas iela 3 for students, staff, graduates and anyone else interested: on Thursdays at 18:30 in odd weeks and on Mondays at 17:00 in even weeks. Outside the city, Olaines šaha klubs holds a monthly children’s tournament at the Olaine sports centre, Siguldas šaha klubs runs rapid tournaments for school-children in the Sigulda parish culture house, and A.B. Šahs of Jaunmārupe runs the Šaha harmonija tournaments in Mārupe. A few clubs appear only in the federation’s member register, and their cards say so.
